Drawing

The practice of drawing from observation creates a record of a particular time, never to be had again. It is a way to understand the form and light in a landscape and the atmosphere of a place. When I start a painting I use drawing, whether from direct observation or as a mark making exercise, to build a structure. The painting then has a skeleton on which to build.
